Final Episode – “ Taste and Sleep”

“This is no joke my daughter. Kobby is not at peace. His mother needs to hear this” Grandmother said.

Just then my Grandmother dashed off from my room, leaving me alone.

I began to sob but this time around I was afraid being alone. I thought Kobby might show up and for the first time I wasn’t ready to see him.

His presence will drive me insane now that I know he is not part of the living. I cried bitterly. Somehow I blamed myself for having done this covenant with Kobby. Just because of that he is no more.

What was meant to keep us has now separated us and now I’m being haunted by guilt.

In no time my grandmother showed up with my parents. Just when I saw them, I ran to them, and gave them hug.

“It shall be well my daughter” my mother said trying to console me.

“Lust” my Grandmother called out. “We are going to put an end to this. Are you willing to go to Ms. Benson’s house together with us”

I wasn’t sure I was ready, but if this was what my Kobby wanted, I have to do it. I now understood that, it’s only by doing this that will make Kobby be at peace wherever he is.

I nodded in response and quickly we set off to Ms. Benson’s house.

Nothing had really changed since I last came to this house, except that, there was this young man fixing Kobby’s window. The one I broke with the rock.

We had gotten to the compound and was walking to the main door when suddenly Jojo the dog came running towards us while barking.

My dad was the only man in our midst. We all hid behind him. Suddenly, my dad stamped his foot on the ground and gave Jojo a wild look. Just like that, the hunter became the haunted. Jojo got scared of my dad and ran off immediately.

As if Ms. Benson was waiting to for Jojo to devour us, apparently she was just close-by watching everything that was happening without doing anything.

“Stupid Dog” She said. “You can’t even drive away unwanted strangers. I should be starving you to death” she said as she came towards us.

It was clear, that we weren’t wanted in the house. But we were here anyway. My grandmother was the one who took charge of everything.

“How may I help? Have you come to break another window or perhaps, see if there are anymore children left In my belly so you can carry on with your superstitious covenant? Ms Benson busted out.

“Woman, hold on. Trust me, this place will be the last place we would ever think of coming if it wasn’t of any importance. What we have for you will be of benefit to you than us. So you better treat us with some dignity” My grandmother said.

To our surprise, Ms Benson was calm afterwards. This was actually the first time someone had spoken back at her. She wasn’t used to it. She always felt on top but not this time around.

Suddenly, the man in the woman’s flesh, Ms Benson, invited us in and gave us seat.

“What is it that you have for me” She asked.

“I believe you know Lust and her relationship with your son when he was alive” my grandmother began talking.

“Apparently, Lust is still seeing your son all the time just because he has a message for you”

Ms. Benson began to laugh. “So are you here to mock me or what? Have you not done enough already”

I don’t know what came over me. Ms Benson was sounding so annoying that it began to irritate me. My reaction came again. And this time around it was against the mother of my one true love.

“Ms Benson. You need to listen and listen good” I got up said to her. My parents tried to stop me but there were too late. Words were already coming out of my mouth.

“Day In and Day out I keep seeing your son, thinking he was alive. You remember when I broke your window. It was him I came to see and ever since then, I see him all the time and the only words that comes out of his mouth is, he needs to sleep and he needs water. Now tell me, how can you explain that.” I couldn’t believe I could actually let the cat out of the bag like that.

Ms Benson was struck with silence. Then tears came down from her cheeks.

“I understand the message. And it’s true it’s from my son” She said. “Kobby is still in the morgue and hasn’t been buried. And I believe it’s about time I did that. After the “one-week ceremony” it has been back and forth. We haven’t been able to come with the funeral date but I believe the Time is now. My poor son needs to sleep with his ancestors.” She said.

That was when I remembered that, those guest I met at this house when I came from my grandmother’s place were here for the one-week ceremony. No wonder Kobby escaped from the question.

“Before, Kobby joined his ancestors, his last words request was to drink water. But just when I brought him the water, He was already gone. Thank you very much my daughter” Ms Benson said.

I couldn’t believe that she actually called me her daughter. She was really grateful for the message she had received.

“Kobby really loved you. That was why he only chose to appear to you and tell you this. I hold nothing against you. I will see to it that we give my son a befitting burial” Ms. Benson added.

Our mission was accomplished and we left the house on a good note.

Ever since we visited Ms. Benson’s house, there has not been any sign of Kobby. It’s been about a week now and I had still not gotten over his death.

This time around I opted to go with my grandmother and live with her for some time. Probably that will clear up my mind.

It was during this time I heard about Kobby’s funeral. My parents went to pay their last respect but I was stuck here with grandmother. I personally didn’t want to go to the funeral because I didn’t know how I could handle it because of my condition

I wrote everything in my diary so that such memories wouldn’t be lost.

“Kobby. I really miss him.” Those were the final words in my diary as I closed that chapter.

I place the diary right beside me and went to bed with my eyes fixed on the ceiling. The ceiling fan kept turning and making a whole lot of noise.

At grandmother’s place, everything is as old as herself. I tried my best to sleep but I couldn’t. All of a sudden, I felt cold breeze on my body then my entire skin got filled with goose pimples.

As I began to observe this, there he was again standing right beside my bed.

“Kobby” I said. I became so scared but all he did was to smile at me. He was happy. He didn’t say anything. He just gave me a wave and slowly walked away.

That was it. He was gone. I was relieved when he left. His massage was clear now. He was now at peace.

The End.
